The Power of Going with the Flow

I used to think that I needed to be as productive as possible. I would schedule activities, events, and tasks to maximize my time. When vacation time or long weekends rolled around, I would automatically consider everything I could accomplish. I’d create “to do” lists to keep me on track, and happily cross off each task as I completed it.

This constant barrage of activity did often leave me depleted though. I was regularly in a state of burnout and sleep deprivation. I pushed myself to the limits, never fully realizing that this relentless drive was counterproductive to my well-being and happiness.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten a little better at creating more balance in my life. I’m starting to learn that I don’t need to be always pushing forward.

Nature operates in cycles, in seasons, and it’s ok for me to do the same.

There are times to work hard and produce a lot. There are also quiet times. Instead of resisting the season and forcing myself to generate and do more, I’m starting to learn how to shift gears and slow down, to go with life’s ebbs and flows.

Not only does this benefit my overall mental and physical health but it also provides a more fulfilling life.

True achievement isn’t about the constant activity or accumulation of things. And slowing down or changing direction isn’t a sign of failure. Rather it’s a strategic choice that leads to long term satisfaction and success.

Of course, in order to embrace the seasons of our life, we need to be able to recognize them and welcome all they have to offer.

This has become essential to me.

Now, when I know I’m going to have some down time, I take the opportunity to sign up for a course or I spend more time with a hobby. When I know I’m going to be busy, I try to keep my weekends free to help find some balance and relaxation in my life.

This only works though if I am aware and aligned with the cycles of my personal and professional life.

It is something that I continue to work on, and I invite you to try too.

So, as a challenge for this week, try to identify the season you’re in. Are you going with life’s ebbs and flows? Or are you resisting? If so, what changes can you make to embrace the season that you’re in?

As I continue my own journey, I’m discovering that going with the flow has not only eased the pressure to be productive but has also led to a greater sense of satisfaction.

I invite you to also embrace the flow and see how it transforms you.

Best wishes, Lauren
